Treasures of Grace

In his great mercy towards mankind, God sacrificed his Son, Jesus Christ on a cross to cancel our sin debt. Through faith in Jesus Christ, the heirs of salvation receive God’s free gift of grace. The grace of God means God’s unmerited favor towards mankind. God’s grace provides invaluable benefits for the heirs of salvation. It is important to know what the grace of God is, and how it affects our lives. In this article we will define the grace of God and discuss some of the many treasures of God’s grace that are available to the heirs of salvation.

As with many words in the Bible, the word “grace” is used throughout the scriptures with several different meanings depending on the context of the scripture in which it is used. The word “grace” that is first used in the New Testament in Luke 2:40 is defined in the Strong’s Concordance as G5485 and is translated charis, which means goodwill, loving-kindness, and favour (Blue Letter Bible). The Bible (KJV) translates G5485 as grace, favour, thanks, and pleasure (Blue Letter Bible). The following is a list of some of the many treasures of the grace of God.

Abundant Life – Grace brought us abundant life. Jesus says, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Adoption into God’s Family – Grace adopts us into the family of God. Paul writes to the church at Ephesus, “Having predestinated us into the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will” (Eph. 1:5).

Angels – These ministering spirits are often erroneously left out of lists describing the grace of God. However, angels have always existed in the kingdom of God. Strong’s defines angel as H4397 and is translated malˈāk from an unused root word meaning to dispatch as a deputy. The Bible (KJV) translates H4397 as angel, messenger, and ambassador (Blue Letter Bible). Angels ministered to Jesus after he was tempted of the devil in the wilderness (Matt. 4:11). An angel freed Peter from prison while the church prayed to God without ceasing for him (Acts 12). We are instructed in Hebrews 13:2, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." The Bible says, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” (Heb. 1:14).

Divine Protection – Grace gives us divine protection. King David writes in his first psalm of thanks to the LORD, “He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm” (1 Chron. 16:21-22). Zechariah writes of his encounter with the angels, “For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye” (Zech. 2:8).

Eternal Life – Grace delivers us from the bondage of fear and death (Heb. 2:15). Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not parish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Forgiveness of Sins – Grace grants us forgiveness of sins (Col. 1:14). Paul writes, “In whom we have through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Eph. 1:7).

Freedom from Bondage – Grace through Jesus Christ frees us from all bondage. While in the synagogue on the sabbath day, Jesus read what was written of him in Isaiah 61:1-2. The scripture says, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the LORD” (Luke 4:18-19). Paul writes to the Galatians, “STAND fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Gal. 5:1).

Health and Healing – Grace provides health and healing for us. The Bible says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5).

Heaven – Grace prepares a place for us to be with God (John 14:1-3). Jesus says, “In my father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).

Heirs of God’s Promises – Grace qualifies us as children of God. Paul writes to the Romans, “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together” (Rom. 8:17).

Holy Ghost – In most lists that contain the benefits of God’s grace, the Holy Spirit is listed. However, the phrase "Holy Ghost" is preferred on this list because the Holy Ghost is a gift to mankind (Acts 2:38), while the Holy Spirit represents the Spirit of God. The Holy Ghost contains many treasures within itself in the form of spiritual gifts to mankind (Heb. 2:4). Paul says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Rom. 8:16).

Justification – Grace justifies us, and we are not justified by our works (Titus 3:7). Paul says, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24).

Kingdom of God – Grace allows us to operate in the spiritual realm of God. The HarperCollins Bible Dictionary defines the “kingdom of God” as "The reign of God, or the realm over which God rules or will rule." The Bible says, “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:20-21).

Mercy – Grace granted us mercy for our unrighteousness (Heb. 8:12). Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Peace of God – Grace gives us the peace of God. Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

Reconciliation – Grace reconciles us to God (Col. 1:20). Paul says, “And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5:18).

Redemption – Grace redeemed us from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:2). In his letter to the Galatians, Paul writes, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, CURSED IS EVERY ONE THAT HANGETH ON A TREE” (Gal. 3:13).

Regeneration – Grace gives us a spiritual renewal through the new birth. Paul writes to Titus, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5).

Wealth – Grace gives us power to get wealth. The Bible says, “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day” (Deut. 8:18).

If you would like to have a personal relationship with Jesus, you must be born-again according to Acts 2:38 which reads, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
