The Word of God is God

God has many attributes and although he has revealed some of his attributes and character to us through the Bible, our human minds may never fully comprehend all of who God is. However, one thing that is certain is that God cannot be separated from his Word. The attributes of God and the attributes of the Word of God are the same.

Jesus Christ is the Word of God manifested in the flesh (John 1:14). The Word of God deserves the same honor and reverent fear as God. The Bible says, “Wherefore God has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name” (Phil. 2:9).

The Word of God is God (John 1:1). To honor God we must honor his Word. The Word of God should be the primary element of Christian assemblies and fellowship. David writes that we should, “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his holy name” (Psa. 100:4).

This article will discuss only a few of the attributes of God and his Word, and with the use of supporting scriptures show that God and his Word are one.

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD

The attributes of God are creator, eternal, immutable, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. These attributes determine that God is the Supreme Being and all creation must respond to his commands. The following list defines the attributes of God and provides scriptural references to support each attribute.

Creator God is the creator and sustainer of the world. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Gen. 1:1).

Eternal God is infinite. “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8).

Immutable God does not change. “For I am the lord, I change not . . .”  (Mal. 3:6).

Omnipotent God has unlimited power. “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26).

Omniscient God knows all things. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good” (Prov. 15:3).

Omnipresent – God is everywhere. “If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there” (Ps. 139:8).

THE NAMES OF GOD

As stated before, the attributes and character of God are more that we can comprehend with our human minds. However, the following list of the names of God gives us some insight into the character of God.

Elohim Strong One, divine. “IN the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Gen. 1:1).

Adonai Lord, indicating a master-to-servant relationship. “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue” (Ex. 4:10).

El Elyon Most High, the strongest One. “And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all” (Gen. 14:20).

El Roi The strong One who sees. “And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?” (Gen. 16:13).

El Shaddai Almighty God. “AND when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Gen. 17:1).

El Olam Everlasting God. “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding” (Isa. 40:28)

Yahweh LORD “I AM,” meaning, the eternal self-existent God. “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” (Ex. 3:14).

THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE WORD OF GOD

The Word of God is God's revelation of who he is, and defines his will and purpose. Christians often refer to The Holy Bible as the Word of God. However, according to The HarperCollins Bible Dictionary, the phrase "Word of God" used in scripture often does not refer to the written word, but instead to the spoken words of God, or those inspired by God to speak. The same is true in Christendom today. The phrase “Word of God” is not limited to the written words of scripture, but includes the written word, and the words of those inspired by God to speak.

King David says, “. . . for thou has magnified thy word above all thy name” (Psa. 138:2). As we look at the attributes of the Word of God we will see that the attributes are the same as the attributes of God. The following list defines the attributes of the Word of God and provides scriptural references to support each attribute.

Creator – The Word of God is the creator and sustainer of the world. “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth (Psa. 33:6).

Eternal – The Word of God is infinite. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matt. 24:35).

Immutable – The Word of God does not change. “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us” (Heb. 6:17-18).

Omnipotent The Word of God has unlimited power. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and shall prosper in the thing whereto I send it” (Is. 55:11).

Omniscient The Word of God knows all things. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit , and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).

Omnipresent The Word of God is everywhere. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Heb. 4:13).

OTHER ATTRIBUTES OF THE WORD OF GOD

Just as the attributes and character of God are beyond our comprehension, so are the attributes of the Word of God. As we mentioned before, God can not be separated from his Word. The following list contains some other attributes of the Word of God.

The Word of God is fire. “Is not my word like as a fire? Saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” (Jer. 23:29).

The Word of God is pure. “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him” (Prov. 30:5).

The Word of God is a shield and buckler. “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him” (Ps. 18:30).

The Word of God is right and true. “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever” (Ps. 119:160).

The Word of God is a lamp. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Ps. 119:105).

The Word of God is life. “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

The Word of God is our teacher. “The entrance of thy word giveth light; it giveth understanding to the simple” (Ps. 119:130).

The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:17).

The Word of God is joy. “I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil” (Ps. 119:162).

The Word of God is strength. “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me” (Ps. 119:50).

The Word of God is our healer. “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Ps. 107:20).

The Word of God sanctifies. “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word” (Eph. 5:26).

FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH HIS WORD

God and his Word are inseparable. The best way for us to have fellowship with God is through his Word. The Bible reads, “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: And my father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23). To have fellowship with God through his Word we must read; study; meditate on; speak; listen to; obey; and trust the Word of God.

If you desire to have a personal relationship with God, you must be born again according to Acts 2:38 where it is written, “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
